Another Weatherfish! Ugh!

2018-04-24 643
Kevin Watson was photographing a Black-crowned Night Heron this morning when it caught a fish.

Kevin suspected it was another Oriental Weatherfish, similar to the one that Walt Staab photographed last week.

I checked with Bob Schmidt, a leading weatherfish expert, and he confirmed the I.D.

Great shots, but not good news. It's an invasive species.

I notified the state.  (Thanks, Kevin and Bob!)

Last week's post explaining all about weatherfish — with Walt's photo of an American Bittern — is here.

  • Could also have been dropped by a bird flying overhead. This is how many invasive plants come to “travel” as well.

  • Or perhaps could have been released from aquariums.
Would typically be tough for fish to migrate into Lake Appert unless the Allendale Brook is at flood stage, but …

  • I guess the good news is the birds are eating them. The bad news is they probably migrated into Celery farm as smaller fry from somewhere else where they spawn.
