HELP WANTED: HERONRY LOCALES

IMG_1131
A friend got this e-mail from  Christine Kisiel of the
NJDEP:

The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife – Endangered
and Non-game Species Program (ENSP) is seeking information on inland nesting
colonies of herons.

Colonies that are located on the marsh islands along the
Atlantic coast are easily identified and monitored, but those in inland areas
are more difficult to detect.

   Therefore, ENSP encourages anyone with
information on these colonies to report them to Christina Kisiel at ckisiel@hughes.net. Of special interest
are yellow- and
black-crowned night-heron colonies (especially in the northeast portion of the
state
) and great blue
heron colonies.

For our purposes, a colony is defined as having one or more
pairs of nesting birds – so please don’t hesitate to alert us to areas that
have a small number of birds utilizing them. Thank you for your assistance in
this effort to improve our understanding of the distribution of these species
throughout the state.

This is an opportunity to get the Allendale (and other YCNH
pairs) OFFICIALLY listed with the state. Please forward this info to any other
Fyke members who should see this and who could be of assistance.

    The worst
thing is when the DEP DOESN’T KNOW about the existence of T&E species
locations; when they DO know, it’s easier to protect habitat.
