On Thursday, the Allendale Borough Council plans to honor Founding Father John Fell, who was known as the “Great Tory Hunter,” and to end a centuries-old injustice.
The historic John Fell House sits atop a hill along Franklin Turnpike near the Celery Farm Nature Preserve. The problem is that the road is named not for patriot/inventor Benjamin Franklin but his son William, the last royalist governor of New Jersey and a traitor to the fight for independence.
To right that wrong, the borough is proclaiming that the section of the turnpike that runs through Allendale will henceforth be named for Benjamin, not his son.
