Incorporating the Celery Farm and Screech Owl Companion blogs

A hole in the ice

The Celery Farm’s Lake Appert is melting, and the waterfowl are returning big-time.

Appert_thaw_small_3 A quick look this morning with top birder Rob Fanning revealed hooded mergansers, mallards, black ducks and a couple of green-winged teals. As a bonus, a kingfisher flew over the lake as well.

There have been some great duck sightings all over North Jersey in recent days — because of open water. As Lake Appert thaws, more and more birds will arrive.
