Eagles along the Hackensack (Part II)
If you haven’t gotten a good look at a bald eagle, the time is now and the place is along the Hackensack on either the Teaneck or Hackensack side of the river.
I saw one last month on the Woodcliff Lake Reservoir (pictured here). And I’ve seen a few in the past two weeks or so during a noonday run up River Road in Teaneck.
But none could rival the view I got on Wednesday. I was running past Terhune Park on River Road (about a third of a mile south of Cedar Lane) when I saw the enormous silhouette of a bird perched in a tree across the river in Foschini Park.
Because of the eagles, I now run with a pair of binoculars. I stopped and looked, and there was a spectacular mature bald eagle, with the trademark white head and tail. I circled around to Foschini Park and got a great view of the bird as he took off and flew down river toward Bogota and the Midtown Bridge.
Bald eagles are the largest raptors in the region, and screech owls are the smallest.
Lucky me, I got to see both on the same day.
