Incorporating the Celery Farm and Screech Owl Companion blogs

“It’s an ill wind…”

The Sunday nor’easter, which brought widespread disaster to our region, generated so much flooding locally that it turned our backyard into part of Lake Appert.

As a result, wood ducks have been hanging around in our immediate neighborhood.

Wood_ducks_0417   The two wood ducks pictured at left were house-hunting this morning at our wood-duck nesting box.

It’s not much of a silver lining, but it’s better than nothing.

(The last time the box was used, it was by Mrs. Ace when she and Mr. Ace became an item a month ago.  We have never before seen a wood duck near the place.)

I am a birder enthusiast and feed and house birds on our property. I also have a bluebird trail. I just purchased a screech owl house in hopes to get some nesting(I can learn a lot from your site). I have six acres here in Pennellvile, NY. I love your blog on Mr. and Mrs. Ace. I am currently naturalizing part of our six acres, and am getting my yard certified by the National Wildlife Federation. I too have been following the Maine eagle nest. I hope all goes well for the owls and will check in to see how the family progresses. Good luck!

hi,jim, sorry to hear of your plight. By the way, do you have a cat? Because if not, We’ll substitute “Canada goose” for “pussy-cat.” re: Edward Lear’s “Owl and the Canada goose went to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat.”
As in the poem, hopefully everything turns out well. good luck to the Aces and yourselves.
