Weekend miscellany: Part One

Female_oriole

A female Baltimore oriole is now in our backyard by the stream on a regular basis.

Female_oriole_2 She is clearly building her nest somewhere, and taking the nesting material from dead plants at the water’s edge.

If you have not seen a Baltimore oriole’s nest, check out this link.  The nests are essentially hanging baskets.   http://www.illinoisraptorcenter.org/diaryphotoalbum6.html

We have an oriole nest in between our yard and the neighbors. I put grape jelly and oranges out and the orioles absolutely love this (they come right up to our deck). They have a very pretty whistle. I also strung yarn out for them to build their nest, which they used (100% wool). We have them here every year.
