    The name of this blog is "Birds, Bats and Beyond," and this month the bats have stepped up to the plate.

   When I walk around the backyard scanning the trees for Mr. or Mrs. Ace, I can see dozens of familiar forms zip past as they eat mosquitos and other bugs on the wing.

   They are brown bats, returned to roost nearby.

     Alas, when I tried to photograph a few bats last night, all I got was a bunch of mosquitos nipping at me.

   I did see several nighthawks and several bats, but this night-photography thing is best left to the pros.

    I have participated in the state DEP’s annual bat count twice, and will do so again this year. 

    In the coming weeks I’ll provide information on how you can participate as well.
