How do you pronounce ‘pileated’?

I found a neat Web site that might help resolve this little debate among birders:

"How do you prounounce the word pileated, as in pileated woodpecker?

    I agree!

  • Actually a couple of years back PBS had a program about the possibilities of Ivory Billed Woodpeckers and in the course of the program a couple of experts spoke about Pileateds. One expert pronounced it Pie-lee-ated, the other Pill-ee-ated. I figured then that the word Pileated was like the word Carribbean (Ca-rib-be-in or Carra-be-in)either pronunciation works.

  • These are cool birds. Last week when I went to photograph the coyotes for a second time, I saw one about 40 yds from me on the ground… but I didn’t try to get closer, too much brush on the way.
About 3 years ago, before I knew what they were I was right under a tree where one was clinging to, I took a few pics. (I had a terrible camera back then though).
I’m hoping that now that I have a better camera I’ll take some good shots this year! I love the sounds they make!
