Waiting for the baby wood ducks
I would have thought that the wood ducklings would have hatched and left the nesting box by now, but here I sit.
We saw the male and female check out the box on April 16 for the first time that we know of, and there was a long period of time that the male wood duck would sit atop the box while the female was inside.
Incubation is supposed to take 30 days from after the last egg is laid. It is now June 4, and still nothing.
The marsh warden says that it’s next to impossible to see the babies leave the nest — it happens so fast, and you have to be in the right place at just the right time. I was just incredibly lucky to see it happen four years ago in the Celery Farm.
With each passing day, I am more and more convinced he is right. As usual.
