     The other night, my wife spotted this large bug on an envelope sticking out of the mailbox under the porch light.

   Although it resembles a giant lady bug, a little research showed that it is more likely a grapevine beetle. 

   One Web site I consulted said they are potentially too destructive but "rarely cause any serious damage":
