Saving endangered critters and their habitats
I did a story for The Record today on what to do if you think you’ve seen an endangered or threatened species.
The link is below — and so are links to the state’s Endangered and Non-Game Species Web site, including the form you need to fill out.
A classic example of when to report is the cliff swallows that are nesting in Paramus. They are a "species of special concern," and their habitat should get special protections from the state.
The Web site:

The form to report a critter:

I remember finding this turtle while hiking up in the Ramapo area and I thought… could this be one? Sure as hell looks like it to me. I’ve reported the siting but it was literally 3 yrs ago. Still worth investigating I figure.
Thanks for the article. Hope I’m right and this is one of them. -
No photo. I just filled out the Sighting Report Form, and am sending the information, as well as a map to Trenton. I was so excited to see the picture in the Record this am, and equally pleased to have an opportunity to share my sighting.

That’s great. You didn’t get a photo by any chance? Let me know, and I’ll check with the state turtle expert.
Box turtle shells are exquisite, aren’t they? -
I saw an Eastern Box turtle about a month ago in my neighborhood in Paramus. I was shocked to see it. I hadn’t seen one in about 40 years, since growing up in Wyckoff where they were pretty common then.
