Newt!
Pedro, a friend of this blog, saw this nifty guy while hiking at Campgaw Mountain last week after a rain.
Pedro says it’s an eastern newt, or red spotted newt.
What an amazing creature — and great photography as well.

Wow! I used to see those all the time at summer camp and up by my lake. Haven’t spotted one in years. Great picture, too!

Haven’t seen one of these in years! This is a species that can’t make up its mind whether to be aquatic or terrestrial–goes from egg and tadpole in water, comes up on land as this “red eft” stage, travels for a couple of years, then goes back into the water and turns olive drab as the red-spotted newt.
