Newt!

Newt1_2

Pedro, a friend of this blog, saw this nifty guy while hiking at Campgaw Mountain last week after a rain.

Pedro says it’s an eastern newt, or red spotted newt.

What an amazing creature — and great photography as well.

  Thanks for sharing, Pedro.

  • Thanks for the comments and thank you Jim for posting it. I doubt I’ll be seeing another one of these any time soon!

Wow! I used to see those all the time at summer camp and up by my lake. Haven’t spotted one in years. Great picture, too!

  • Haven’t seen one of these in years! This is a species that can’t make up its mind whether to be aquatic or terrestrial–goes from egg and tadpole in water, comes up on land as this “red eft” stage, travels for a couple of years, then goes back into the water and turns olive drab as the red-spotted newt.
