Montclair Hawk Watch
Went to Montclair Hawk Watch on Saturday to catch a little of opening day of hawk counting there.
It is open only three months a year, and the views are spectacular.
With binoculars, you can see Manhattan, Jersey City and the Statue of Liberty with ease.
Also saw three bald eagles while Patty and I were there — the eagle-eyed regulars had seen 10 by late afternoon.
The hawk watch is a little hard to find.
Follow the directions on the NJ Audubon Web site, then look for the sign.
There’s quite a steep set of steps to climb, so take your time.
The ascent is definitely worth it. A very wide and flat viewing area. We also saw monarchs, a couple of hummingbirds and a resudent redtail.
Montclair is the second oldest hawk watch in America, behind only Hawk Mountain in Pennsylvania.
Great views and a very nice bunch of people.

I’ve never been to a major Hawk Watch but I am looking forward to my first next week.
