Woodpeckers three

Img_7243_4

I’ve been putting out suet in the cold weather, leaving the suet in the plastic container so that suet hogs like starlings and grackles don’t congregate.
It has worked great. In the past two weeks  we have had a steady stream of downies, hairies and red-bellieds. The two photos here I thought were of interest because:
The red-bellied above seems to have just a hint of yellow in his tail — a reminder that he is related to the flicker somehow?
The hairy and downy shared the suet, and they look enough alike you would think you were watching parent and offspring. The size difference is enormous. So if you’re ever wondering if it’s a downy of a hairy, it’s a downy. When you see a hairy woodpecker, you’ll know it.
More information on red-bellieds here, hairies here, and downies here.

  • Wonderful pictures. Ditto Tom’s comment. The Downy/Hairy picture is a fantastic learning tool!

  • Fantastic D&H side-by-side photo. The body and beak size comparison puts all ID doubt to rest! And I don’t think I had ever seen the underside of a red belly’s tail. Neat!
