Incorporating the Celery Farm and Screech Owl Companion blogs

Kingfisher plus

Kingfisher_0116_2  I thought I would use this post as a quick bird update.

Ace the screech owl is still awol — since Saturday.

I am not sure how this will play out, but I am optimistic.

I saw the kingfisher at right on Lake Appert in the Celery Farm yesterday morning, and he was kind enough to pose.

I wanted to take a little video, but a gull made him take off before I could get started. Another time.

The heron is also still around, and as fascinating as ever as he tries to fish in the lake.

At lunch, along the Hackensack River between Teaneck and Hackensack, I saw another bald eagle flying up-river. I am now batting .600 on looking for eagles on the Hackensack River at lunchtime this year.

Although I could not photograph the fleeting eagle, I did get a photo of a perched red-tail.

I used to say that seeing a red-tail, a kingfisher and a great blue heron the same day was a trifecta.  All three are distinctive and striking (in more ways than one).

Add a bald eagle to the mix, and it was a great day.

But I would trade them all for one certain screech owl.

That’s great you saw an eagle near the Shops at Riverside Square.
I went to Terhune Park today and saw a huge red-tailed hawk but no eagle. Right now I have been batting .500 at lunchtime. My advice is to stop by Terhune Park if you are in the area, but don’t make a special trip. If you head north on River Road, you can make your way to Brett Park and check out the Hackensack River and the Steuben House by walking across the pedestrian bridge at New Bridge Landing.
    Good luck!

I saw my first real, live Bald Eagle in the “wilds of Hackensack”, thanks to you.
On the way back, with my friend, from taking pics of the 2 Queens (ocean liners) on Sunday around 3:30, on a whim, we went to the deserted parking lot of Bloomingdales on Rt. 4. WOW–there was a magnificent Eagle. Am going to Terhune Park this Sat. with hopes of more pics.
    thanks Jim.

Crossing my fingers that your little guy will be back soon. He might just have needed a little vacation!
