Eco-roses

Rose2_2    I have a story in The Record today on a new breed of cut flower, called  "eco-friendly" flowers, which are grown with far fewer pesticides than traditional cut flowers.

You can read the story here.

Cut flowers sold in the United States are typically grown in South America, where environmental regulations and worker-safety rules are far less stringent.

The good news is that public awareness is growing, and there’s slowly increasing pressure for the farmers to improve.

The cut flowers are safe for consumers — just not very friendly to the environment in Ecuador and Colombia, or the workers who have to grow them to feed their families.
