Youth Movement: Part II

Baby_redbellied

This little guy ahs been hanging around my backyard feeder.

At first glance I thought it was some strange (but somehow familiar) woodpecker — a red-bellied that Mother Nature had misplaced before she finished adding red.

A quick look at Sibley set me straight. It apparently is a juvenile red-bellied. In June-July, they lack that trademark red on the head.

   That’s the beauty of being a birder-in-perpetual-training.

I learn something every day, so long as I have the time and sense to pay attention.

    Hi Jim,
We had a young red-bellied at our feeder last year. Hope to see one this year. I have to say (with affection) that he really went through that “awkward teen” phase as he developed the red feathers. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting too.
