Screech Owl Basics: The Intro

Ace small    Because of this blog, I get quite a few e-mails about Screech Owls and Screech Owl nesting boxes from as far away as Florida around this time of year

'Tis the season when people see a Screech Owl poking its head out of a nesting box or tree cavity and have their curiosity piqued.

People want to know all about putting up the nesting boxes, installing cameras, and finding out more about these mysterious creatures that just might be setting up house beyond their backyards.

   More info follows.

First: A disclaimer. I am not a Screech Owl expert. My knowledge is based on having  one or more Screech Owl nesting boxes for the past six or seven years, and an infra-red videocam and a microphone in one nesting box for 2.5 years.
The Screech Owl family that has used the nesting box the past two springs has had a combined total of nine owlets, all of whom successfully left the box after their one-month incubation and one-month infancy.
When I do not know the answer to a question (often), I asked friends and colleagues who do.
I also would like to emphasize that no two Screech Owls — and no two Screech Owl habitats –are quite alike. What worked for me may not work for you.

WEDNESDAY: PART ONE, All about Screech Owls.

  • Today we wanted to make more repairs to the owl house. Too late.
My husband almost fell off the ladder. An adult screech owl’s wing came out when he opened the side. We had put a piece of wood in the inside of bottom of house to cover the hole the squirrels had made. He was going to put a metal plate on the bottom of the house, to cover the hole on the outside and screw this into the wood on the inside so the squirrels would not continue to work at the hole on the bottom. But the owl is already roosting or nesting. Seems early. But then I never did know when they take up residence. Candace Pfau
