New birding column!

Female mallard_3849     I am pleased to announce that starting today, I will be writing a birding column for The Record every other Thursday.
The emphasis is on North Jersey birds and bird-watching, written for the casual birder, and I'd love to hear from you on what you'd like to read more about.  Just e-mail me here.
The first column of "The Bird Watcher" is about what to do — and what not to do — when you find a young bird on the ground.
Today's column, on Page F-4 of The Record, features a photo by Jerry Barrack, principal photographer for the Celery Farm book.
For readers who are tuning into this blog for the first time, I hope you will enjoy the celebration of nature that this blog represents.
The blog specializes in all things Celery Farm, raptors in general and Eastern Screech Owls in particular.  In the next couple of weeks, I ill be writing about the five Screech owlets that recently left the nest box in my back yard.

  • I saw your article the other day and appreciated the sound advice. Great to get it out there, as there is a “little birder” in everyone.

  • Couldn’t get it on the internet but flew to the library!
Great article! They’re lucky to have you do this!!

  • Congratulations! I look forward to reading it, I read it this morning, very interesting!

Made a copy of today’s article in the Record with a cover letter for my school speech children’s parents to alert them of your weekly column. Great way to enhance summer carryover of learned sounds in speech. I am gifting the school library with your wonderful children’s books that I used during the school year with the children I have.

  • Nice work. My daughter and I read it together this morning and look forward to future stories.

  • Nice first edition of the “fledgling” column. Hope it gets fed with many ideas and questions by readers. Now that I know when “The Bird Watcher” will appear, I won’t fly directly to the crossword puzzle in Section F.
