   I have  heard from friends in Belize that Barry Bowen, the owner of Chan Chich Lodge in the northwestern part of that Central American nation, died while trying to emergency-land his private plane on Ambergris Caye on Friday night.

   What's more, we understand that two gifted teachers and their children from Gallon Jug, home to Chan Chich Lodge, also died in the crash.

    This is devastating news to Belize, Gallon Jug, and all who knew and loved these people.

   Doug Goodell, Jerry Barrack and I knew the two teachers, Mike and Jill Casey, from the days when we were working on the coffee-table book "Jungle of the Maya." 

   Doug, Jerry and I saw first-hand the wonders they were working at the school. Mr. Bowen, a dynamic individual, was very supportive of our book project from the start. 

   We will keep them in hearts always.
