The Fanning Report 031110
The inimitable Rob Fanning sez:
"8 Species of ducks at the CF today highlighted by a drake
(winter-plumaged) RUDDY DUCK–a species which does not appear every
spring at the CF. [See photo, next post down.]
"Earlier in the week 3 PINTAIL were present, and
others have reported Common Mergansers–for an even 10 species of ducks
seen this week.
"A Great Blue was out in the marsh, and at dusk a pair of the croaking beasts flew over Green Way.
"It was also perfect conditions for Timberdoodles and I was treated to
a minimum of 3 AMERICAN WOODCOCK calling/displaying at Green Way. The
first bird called at 6:12 and shortly thereafter one landed in the
middle of Green Way, PEEENING away.
"Great looks as it was still fairly
light out–and even better looks in the scope. Lots of flybys and
squabbles, almost seemed like I was surrounded by the Bogsuckers at
times! Twice in the fading light I witnessed an aggressive Woodcock
walking toward another w/ raised/bent wings. Never saw this behavior
before!
"Unfortunately, no one else was there to enjoy the show w/ me. I heard
that yesterday was good viewing too so I hope some others got to enjoy
the show."

So,I googled both timberdoodles and bogsuckers and found out that they are terms of endearment for American Woodcocks. Would like to make the aquaintance of this bird with the colorful names.

Thanks for increasing my vocabulary with the colorful words Timberdoodles and Bogsuckers. May I please have definitions of both words? I want to make sure that I use them correctly.
