    Aesculus pavia
see current issue of “The American Gardener” for article on buckeyes

  • I suppose there are 2 possibilities:
    1. Eye of horse + Horsechestnut or
    2. Eye of buck + Buckeye
The eye looks more horsey to me, but I can’t buck the fact that the tree in the meadow has been called a buckeye. But then again, if both photos were taken at the Celery Farm–probably hasn’t been a horse through there since the olden days. So I guess I’ll go for answer 2 and be embarrassed, as usual.
Such a dilemma! But either way, the Genus name of the tree is Aesculus, named after Aesculapius, the Greek god of medicine. So take this highly tentative answer, even if it’s a bitter pill to swallow.
