Stepping up for Lorrimer…

The redoubtable (first or second definition*) John Workman writes:

This is the time of year that the Fyke Nature Association (which helps maintain the Celery Farm) raises money for Lorrimer
Sanctuary, "our" nearby New Jersey Audubon Center in Franklin Lakes.

The method of raising funds is simple.  Teams of Fyke members
scour the trees, bushes and waters of the Celery Farm from morning to
night this Saturday, May 15, counting the number of bird species they
find. (The total is usually between 60 and 80
species).

(* Redoubtable:  Commanding respect, or Someone who can be second-guessed a lot)

   Details follow.

People are asked to pledge a certain amount for every species
found.  This amount is usually anywhere from ten cents to
two dollars per bird.   So, for example, if you pledge 50 cents a
species, and the team finds 70 different types of birds, your pledge comes
to …… (insert sound of my super-dee-dooper computer crunching the
numbers here) ….. $35.

Or, if you hate uncertainty, you can pledge a flat
sum.

The money goes to support programs at Lorrimer, many of which are
designed to educate young people about conservation and to instill a greater
appreciation for the natural world.

If you wish to pledge, you have two options:

    1)  you can send an email to John Brotherton at jbro29@optonline.net
and tell him how much your pledge is.   Give him your
name, address and phone number… or…

2)  you can send your pledge to John B. via regular, "snail mail"
at Fyke Nature Association, Box 141, Ramsey, NJ 07446.

Finally, if you also want to participate in the count itself on
Saturday, please contact Darlene Lembo, also known as the Supreme Keeptress of
the Celery Farm Birding List, at dml709@att.net

She informs me that there are still some openings for the 10AM to noon
period, as well as the 4PM to 6PM slot.

All best, and thanks in advance for helping us support a very worthy
cause.
