One knowledgeable birder e-mailed me the following regarding the Chipping Sparrow with the malformed beak:

"Birth defect, or it ate something bad – more likely a birth defect due to something the parent was exposed to. The bird is fortunate just to be able to feed itself – the beak is important!" (Thanks forthe input!)
