Mystery Revealed
This plastic doohickey is designed to dispense yarn for birds to use for their nests. (Patrick Carney ID'd it correctly; congrats!)
I have never seen a bird go near it.
I am offering it free to a good home (or even a bad home).
As to why I paid $2 for it — it went to a good cause (the Frelinghuysen Arboretum) and seemed like a good idea at the time.
And now that it has been a Monday Morning Mystery, probably not a total waste.

I always found the best thing to do to supply the birds with nesting materials is to comb your dog or cat outside and in the spring you will find wonderfull nests woven with the warm fur! Surprisingly they wil use it!

I haven’t actually got one of these, but it I tried putting yarn and other similar materials in a suet cage around breeding season. Nothing used it, LOL.

Might not attract birds but, with fall coming, if you hang it in the right place, you could get some knitters. Maybe even get a sweater out of it by December. Worth a try!
