Don Torino wrote a great column about the new grasses at the Celery Farm, for wildnewjersey.tv.

Don writes: "When
most folks in New Jersey speak of grass, they usually are discussing
their front lawn and are distressing over whether or not it looks as
green as their neighbors’ carpet of green heaven. 

"If it is not up to
snuff, it’s off to the local home improvement store for a car load of
fertilizers and pesticides to make sure the Jones’ don’t come out on
top. But there are real grasses out there that are very serious and ones
that our wildlife depends on for survival.

"They are our native grasses
such as Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, Indian grass, and Switch Grass.
Birds such as the Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, and Grasshopper Sparrows
are in decline because of the loss of native grass habitat.

"But at the
Celery Farm Nature Preserve in Allendale, they are trying to do
something about it…."
