Here's a shot of the female Goldeneye found by Rob Fanning at Phairs Pond this morning — not quite close enough for a good shot with my 400mmm lens…

Is it a Common or Barrow's? Input most welcome. In either case, this is a first-ever sighting for the Celery Farm. (Prevalent opinion is that it is a Common Goldeneye.)

Will post Jerry Barrack's photos of the Goldeneye later today.

  • Nice shot with the bittersweet in the background.

  • Consensus, incl. from Goldeneye Expert Tom Boyle, says Common. The bird is unusual in that most Common females show only a partially yellow-orange bill–but the head shape is wrong for Barrow’s.

  • Going from the field guide, I think a Common Goldeneye. Female Barrow’s seems to have a less rounded head, and doesn’t have that white area near the back.
