Monday Mystery: Coop or Sharpie?
Marsh Warden Mike Limatola had an accipiter at his feeders in Ho-Ho-Kus earlier this month, which raised the perennial question, Sharp-shinned or Cooper's Hawk? Mike posted a couple of shots — I think this is the definitive one…
What do you think? Coop or Sharpie?
I had a similar accipiter perched on one of my feeders last week, but did not have a camera handy. Note to self: Always have camera ready.

what do I know? I met a dear birder of the Farm in Franklin Lakes looking at the many pairs of plovers I ,too, was looking at—which I thought were wood ducks…I’ll never remember them all.

Is it the cankles (thick legs) that give it away?

Coop all the way!

I think Cooper’s Hawk, but the feature that gave it away to me is that the cap is darker than the rest of the body. 🙂

This is an adult Cooper’s Hawk. The tail is long, the tarsus thick, the bill large.
