Celery Farm Haiku Contest

Gabriele Schmitt of Fyke writes:

There is talk that spring will be making its annual appearance one of these days. Before you head out on a field trip or to putter in your gardens or to putt on the golf course, maybe you'd like to try your hand at at little haiku. Perhaps shake some frosted bits out of the grey matter..

You may be familiar with haiku; you may know there are many variations/rules. For the purpose of this invitation and so everyone has the same form, we'll keep it simple.

Your haiku should be 17 syllables – in 3 lines – broken out as 5-7-5. Haiku very often deals with nature, so you are requested to include a bird or other wildlife resident of the Celery Farm.

For example:

I'm snow exhausted.
Red cardinal, framed in white,
Please summon forth Spring.

If you'd like to further challenge yourself, consider including 'The Celery Farm' as 5 of your syllables (in any of the 3 lines), such as:

The Celery Farm
Home to pterodactyls known
As great blue herons.

As you can see, they needn't be perfect … just a bit of fun, while sharing an observation or two of the Celery Farm.

It's not a contest; there are no prizes. There is a deadline though. Please email your haiku to me at gaby413@aol.com by March 15 – yes, the Ides of March – so we might publish some in the next newsletter. Be sure to include your name (as you might want to see it in the newsletter) and town. We may also post some on the board at the Celery Farm.

Have fun. Thank you!
