Fanning Report: Bicknell’s Thrush +

Rob writes:

The Gray-cheeked type thrush first found and photographed at the CF (near Brotherton's Bridge) on Tues. by Julie McCall and Jim Kuehlke has been "confirmed" as a BICKNELL'S THRUSH–a first for the preserve and the 2nd known record for Bergen Co.

Jim got a recording of the soft song on Wednesday, and a number of experts agree that it sounds good for Bicknell's. It also shows the plumage characteristics of Bick–(slight reddish tone to tail/rump) area and a good amount of yellow on lower mandible.

The bird has proven to be elusive at times but Fred Weber re-found it Thursday [but not yet today].

Also at the CF Thursday–a calling YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER (Greenway — Fred Weber also saw it today), Canada and Wilson's Warblers, and a singing Alder Fly heard by others.

Thanks, Rob, and Fred, and great job by Jim K. (and Julie)!

  • I’m not sure where to post this up, but hopefully I can get some advice from the experts here. I was there today with a brand new toy I bought for myself, which is a pair of camera binoculars. They’re terrible. I could have taken better pictures with the first camera cell phone ever made. Every picture I took today, you would think I was either in a tunnel, or bouncing on a trampoline. I’ve been birding for a few decades, though, I’ve been able to get out this year more so than ever. I’ve been hanging at Celery Farm quite a bit this past month. I’m sure some of you have seen me…I look more like I’m up to no good than there to watch birds :). So anyway, in all these years, I’ve never cared to take pictures of what I look at until now. I want more credibility to my sightings, and also a chance to positively identify the birds after the moment passes. I thought camera binoculars would be great, though I should have done my research beforehand. Bottomline is I’m looking for a great way to take pictures, but I’m far from wealthy and can’t dump too much money on something I do recreationally. Any suggestions? With something worthy in my hands, I could have had a great picture of the mink (as he stared at me from 5 feet away), as well as the Bicknells thrush today (as I was 5 feet away from him as well today and the dozen pictures I took all went to naught. So if someone can suggest something nice to own, it’d be very much appreciated. Thank You and sorry for the long post here.

Seen again today (Saturday May 17th) around lunchtime in the same area – the woods between Brotherton Bridge and Blue Heron Pond. Very cooperative. I expected it to be gone today.

  • Bicknell’s seen today by Fred about 4 PM. Visitors from Somerset came up to see it!!
