Black-crowned Night Heron

IMG_0319-001
Thanks to Marsh Warden Mike Limatola, who called to tell me of a nearby and chilled-out Black-crowned Night Heron at the Celery Farm, I was able to get some incredible closeups of this bird.

After Mike and I took a slew of photos, we left, and the heron was still there.

So interesting….your photo clearly demonstrates that the bird’s weight is distributed on the proximal bones of the feet with the distal ones draped over the branch — they are not grasping the branch in this stance.
