Midland Park Red-tail Rescue
Like many members of Fyke, wife Patty and I are runners for The Raptor Trust. When TRT received a report of an injured Red-tail in Midland Park, they called to see if I could investigate and bring the bird in.
So I drove to Midland Park and was heartened by the response of the neighborhood along Maltbie Avenue. So many of the residents were concerned about the Red-tail and were standing by to help in any way.
From what I could gather, neighbors called not only TRT but the McFaul Wildlife Center for help — that was their level of concern.
On my first visit, the bird had flown to a telephone wire (above) and seemed to be OK. After I left, however, it hung from the wire upside-down before falling to the ground.
By the time I returned, it had flown to a low fence nearby.
Although I was nervous wreck trying to get the Red-tail off the fence and into a box, I managed without incident (thanks to some coaching by phone from my friend Mike Newhouse). As it turned out, the poor bird seemed to want help.
Patty and I drove the Red-tail to The Raptor Trust, where it was admitted just before 7 tonight.
Thank goodness for the great folks on Maltbie Avenue, who cared enough so much about the hawk, and The Raptor Trust, which gives us all hope.
Patty and I were happy we could be part of the process.
I will post more about the Red-tail's situation when I hear.
