A Banner Migration for Red-shoulders

Marsh Warden Emeritus Stiles Thomas is going to State Line Lookout today in hopes of catching part of the Red-shouldered Hawk Migration.

This fall has been a good one for this once-thriving hawk. The Quaker Ridge Hawk Watch in Greenwich, Connecticut, has logged at least three days of more than 100 migrating Red-shoulders, with 126 on Halloween and well over 800 for the season.

State Line logged 45 on Thursday and 26 yesterday, and Montclair had 71 on Thursday.

Allendale, of course, has its own Red-shoulder nest near the Celery Farm. Red-shouldered Hawks are endangered in New Jersey when nesting.
