Marsh Warden Mike Limatola found a big bag of bread on the Warden's Watch the other day.
Assuming that the person who left it was planning to feed Canada geese or ducks — and not having fondue for dinner — I had to cringe.
It is illegal to feed waterfowl. It is the quickest way to make a wild bird a domesticated bird, with no fear of humans.
Bread is just about the worst thing to feed birds — you'll kill 'em in the long run and turn them into pet wannabes in the short term.
Consider this advice or do your own Google search.
And if you see some well-intentioned but ill-informed person feeding waterfowl at the Celery Farm — especially bread — please gently suggest that they stop.
