Last Week’s Mystery Answered, Sort of

IMG_2514Last week's mystery was a butterfly under glass photographed in low light at Olana, restored home of the great Hudson River School painter Frederic Church near Hudson, N.Y.

The docent said that Church collected the butterfly specimen in Colombia and kept it in his studio for when he wanted to paint an opalescent part of a scene.

I wondered if anyone knew what kind of butterfly it is, so I could tell the docent…

I got no definitive answers, though several people thought it could be a Morpho, perhaps faded over time.

That was my guess as well, though all the ones I've seen in Central America were far bluer and the wing shape seemed a lot less rounded.

Thanks to all who responded!
