Pair-a-Ducks Paradox

1-IMG_1934Saw these two female Wood Ducks sitting my old owl box by the Celery Farm earlier this week.

The box's hole is too small for either to fit inside, but they chilled atop the box together for several minutes.

This is prime time for Wood Duck viewing in the preserve.

  • I looked at the image closely — looks like it could be a band at first but is not… One other factor — a male Wood Duck was on the ground nearby and even tried to join them atop the box — sort of like angels dancing on top of a pin. I have a perfectly good Wood Duck box nearby, which they ignored. Too much information, right?

Does the one on the downslope have a band on its right leg? Do you think the birds are related?
