Wanted: Questions for ‘The Bird Watcher’

On Wednesday, Jan. 17, I 'm giving an illustrated talk about my 'Bird Watcher' column for the wonderful folks at the Bergen County Audubon Society.

At last count, I'm approaching 200 columns for The Record, on subjects ranging from Gyrfalcons and Black-capped Chickadees to the New Jersey Botanical Gardens and the Galapagos. (The Galapagos has larger turtles, among other things.)

If you have any questions about "The Bird Watcher" column that I can answer on Jan 17 — the funnier the better — email them to me at celeryfarm@gmail.com.

  • I answered this directly — a common situation… The woodpeckers should be fine come fall.

I have a saucer-type hummingbird feeder that I have used for 3 years. This year, a pair of young downy woodpeckers have been at the feeder apparently successfully enjoying the nectar. At first the hummingbirds were upset and would hover over the feeder but lately I see that they now bravely share the feeder with the downies. My question is, is it normal for common birds (as opposed to hummingbirds) to drink nectar? I wonder if it’s harmful for them. Will they go through withdrawal when I remove the hummingbird feeder in the fall?
