Yellowstone: Part I, Scenics

DSCN9986
Thought I'd share some photos of the recent trip that my wife Patty and I took to Yellowstone last week.

The trip, provided by the non-profit Yellowstone Adventures, included two nights at Mammoth Hot Springs, four at the Old Faithful Ski Lodge, and a free night in the Houston Airport.

We traveled by Snowcoach (below), a small bus with large tires, and got out often to look at the natural features, either on foot or on snowshoes.

In addition to some cool wildlife, we saw all the hot springs, waterfalls, geysers, mud pots and fumeroles you could want as part of an excursion called the Old Faithful Winter Expedition package.

We were part of a congenial group of 10 folks from all over the country — Washington State, Virginia, San Diego, Texas, Scotland and Allendale. (I think we got the last winter package of the season.)

The scenery was consistently spectacular. The photos here are all common views, weather-dependent.

We saw Old Faithful up close on our full day there, which was unfortunately also the coldest, grayest and snowiest.

If you have never been to Yellowstone, it is definitely worth the trip. Probably best to avoid the hordes of summer.  Just bring toe warmers in winter.

Will post a couple of videos (I hope), some assorted critters  and an odd post or two during the the week.
