Turtle Rescue on Franklin Turnpike

Eastern Box Turtle Jwright IMG_2718
Driving up the Franklin Turnpike yesterday a.m. and what do I see?

An Eastern Box Turtle, crossing the road away from the preserve.  At a turtle's pace.

I stopped, then slowed traffic, and offered a little help.

Without the "Turtles Crossing" sign, I doubt folks would have known why I was standing in the road, let alone slowed…

Thanks, Allendale Police!

(Insane to have a 40 mph speed limit on this highway, especially next to a nature preserve with egg-laying turtles. Need to petition the county, since turnpike is a county road.)

More on this species of special concern here.
