IMG_2347This week is National Moth Week, including an event Tuesday night in DeKorte Park. Can you help identify the awesome silk moth above, photographed at Montauk this weekend?

Regal moth, Citheronia regalis. Also called the royal walnut moth. The caterpillars are called “hickory-horned devils.” It is native, and threatened.
Note: If you have not yet downloaded the “Seek” app to your phone, give it a go. Seek is a joint venture of California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. It is very easy to use, and makes us naturalist wannabes look brilliant!
