Advice Needed! Squirrel w/ Rude Wound

IMG_1318Sorry for the rude photo, but I wonder if anyone has any advice regarding this backyard squirrel, which appears to have a nasty wound on its back.

I thought it might be mange but it looks more like an open sore.

  • Thanks for all the input! Trying to get more infor from a squirrel rescue group…

  • Possibly a Squirrel Botfly. The squirrels in my yard occasionally get infected. Some survive and live a full life. Some do not. 🙁

    My guess is that it’s the result of an injury that formed an abscess. I believe abscesses form circles. This one burst. Looks pretty mean.

    Looks like a spinal tube defect like spina bifida. So sad.

  • I don’t think so. None of the photos I’ve seen of squirrel pox looks like this single crater.
